NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY ACTION PLAN 2022-26 LAUNCHED

The Ministry of Works and Transport has on Friday 14th October 2022 launched the National Road Safety Action Plan 2022-26 at Mestil Hotel Kampala. The plan follows the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution proclaiming 2021-30 as the second decade of action for road safety.

It is important to note that Uganda is the second (2nd) country in Africa after Zambia and the first (1st) in East Africa to launch the National Road Safety Action Plan. As the Road Safety Coalition Uganda (ROSACU), we commend the Ministry of Works and Transport for finalizing the drafting of the action plan which contributes to the targets under the second decade of action for road safety which aims to reduce road deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. This is through safer roads by design and road safety audits, enforcement of road traffic regulatory framework and strengthening planning, implementation and coordination of road safety interventions.

The launched National Road Safety Action Plan seeks to provide for the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of interventions aimed at improving Road Safety in Uganda.

ROSACU and its members were part of the consultation and drafting process of the National Road Safety Action Plan and we are eagerly look forward to its implementation.

The other key partners from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Uganda Police and Ministry of Works and Transport in the implementation of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2022-26 during a panel discussion dissected what the contents of the Action Plan are and their roles in ensuring that its objectives are attained.

The partners agree that Road Safety is arrived at through a myriad of issues including road design, driver competency, road user discipline, vehicle roadworthiness, enforcement as well as the general environment.

The Chief Guest at the launch was General Edward Katumba Wamala, the Minister for Works and Transport and he called for more partnerships to implement the Action Plan 2022-26 successfully.
